Stem Cell Therapy

A 2 page paper discussing the stem cell aspect of chemotherapy. Stem cells are the progenitor cells of all types of blood cells, including the white blood cells that combat infection and invasion, and red blood cells that supply nourishment to all the tissues of the body. They primarily reside in the bone marrow, but some also can be found circulating in the blood. Cancer chemotherapy depresses bone marrow activity so that fewer blood cells are produced. Stem cell therapy involves harvesting bone marrow prior to chemotherapy treatment, then reintroducing it following treatment so that blood cell production can occur at optimum rates.
