The writer concentrates on the book The Deng Xiaoping Era by Maurice Meisner since this scholarly work gives an excellent overview of the events, politically and culturally, which contributed to the development of the movement. This paper demonstrates that with a thorough knowledge of the background of the movement the rather inexplicable events of 1989 begin to make sense within their own cultural framework.
